3MW Feedback

Some very good work throughout this unit and work produced has been consistently good throughout the year. I do think that you could have been a little bit more imaginative with the documentary but you have posed some interesting points through the text. Good work.

You have described and explained issues relating to factual television programmes with reference to detailed illustrative examples and with generally correct use of subject terminology.

You have explained codes and conventions of factual television programmes with reference to detailed illustrative examples and with generally correct use of subject terminology.

You were able to plan and research a factual programme for television effectively showing some imagination and with only occasional assistance.

You have produced a factual programme for television competently showing some imagination and with only occasional assistance.

3MW Primary research

3MW Secondary research

Research
Retirement and working life.

Life expectancy is rising by three years a decade - and experts warn that could push state retirement age up to 70 by 2050 - http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/pensions/article-3218502/Rising-life-expectancy-push-state-retirement-age-70-2050.html

In 1881 Otto von Bismarck, the conservative minister president of Prussia, presented a radical idea to the Reichstag: government-run financial support for older members of society. In other words, retirement.

Nearly one in eight of the world's workers believe they will never be able to afford to retire fully while millions of people are not financially prepared for life after work, according to international research by HSBC.
HSBC's study confirmed such concerns, with two-fifths of retired people surveyed in the U.K. reporting that they had either made no financial plans or were inadequately prepared for a comfortable retirement _ with 35 percent of them only realizing they were under prepared after they had retired.

Introduction to the news

Part 1

ITV News - 6pm - 27th June
The stories shown were in the following order:
EU referendum – Specifically, the  Polish immigrants and the current state of the economy after Brexit.
Drownings in the UK and what is being done to prevent people from drowning off of the coast of the UK.
Heart disease – Statistics and a dance charity to that is raising money to help people with heart disease.
The Moped Club is travelling 650 miles for charity work for the teenage cancer trust.
Sport – Talking about the Rio Olympics as well as rugby.

The audio and visuals used in the starting sequel are relevant to the news being presented later in the program, shown on screen would be a recording of what had happened recently, such as in this program there were multiple shots of familiar things to do with the referendum, as well as some of the people participating in the Rio Olympics. The audio is quite fast paced to keep the audience’s attention along with a voiceover of a well-spoken man telling us what will be shown later in the program but leave cliff hangers on each of the stories mentioned.

Part 2

The role of a newsreader is to clearly say what the news; they must also have good posture and make themselves look confident with what they are saying. They must have an authoritative voice to capture the audiences’ attention.
The skills that are necessary would be to be able to speak clearly and confidently without stuttering or mumbling, you must be able to have confidence in front of a camera and must be able to deal with pressure with ease. Other skills needed would be to have the ability to remember a large quantity of information and to be able to recite it without problems regularly, finally there must be research done on the topics being discussed before presenting the information.

Part 3

News ordering – This is where the news would be presented in an order which viewers will like, such as most news programmes will start off with bad news and end with good news, this leaves viewers feeling happy and positive.
Breaking news is the term for what is most likely to appear on the news.
The story that is most likely to be shown first is the one that affects the most people, and that has happened recently it is selected like this because it is what the audience most likely wants to see news on.
The other stories on the news are put in an order based on their length and topic.
It is important to act quickly in news due to them only have a certain amount of time that they are given, it is very important that they can get the broadcast done by the time given. It is also important to act quickly due to the chance that the audience may get bored.
A slow news day is a term used to describe a broadcast which does not have many substantial stories to cover; as a result the news that is presented to us is often trivial and is not very important.
The finally story of the broadcast is known as an ‘and finally’ this is usually a light story to put the broadcast to a smoother end and also leaving the audience happy and calm.

News values are a way of ordering the importance of stories, which ones should be included and which ones should not, as well as which ones should go first and which one should go last. Some of the factors are how recent the news is, the amplitude of the news, how many people it affects, the familiarity and finally is the news a surprise? These are the main things that affect what gets into the news broadcast and what order they are placed in. The EU referendum is a recent event that happened which is culturally familiar with the UK, it affects large numbers of people and the result was a surprise to many.

Part 4

Bias through selection and omission is often used to change what people think about the topic by excluding some information and in turn changing or reinforcing their opinion on something.
Bias through placement order is up to the editors, the first story is what the audience would see as the most important story, when it may not be, giving the audience a false impression of the topic.
Stories in the headlines can be biased as they make the audience feel that it is important news when it is in fact not.
The photos and shots used in the news broadcast heavily influence the audience and their opinion on the topic, especially with people; this could change the audience’s views on a certain person to make the look better or worse.
The titles that are used in the news are important as it can give a positive or negative connotation to that person.
When positive or negative words are used when broadcasting the topic, the audience will pick up on it and will view the topic as negative of positive with the words used to describe it, or along with it.

3MW - Production schedule and Risk assessment

Recce for 3MW

The location for filming was perfect for my documentary as the people I were interviewing were able to sit down with me having enough room to get a camera in. Also the lighting is good for filming.

TV adverts - final feeback

Lewis, some very good work produced here and within your group, you have created an effective re-branding adverting concept and a well-produced TV advert.

In regards to unit 2: Communication Skills for Creative Media Production (pitch and presentation):
You were able to use appropriate techniques to extract comprehensive information from written sources and present a well-structured and substantial media production report which conveys information and precise exemplification and justifies conclusions with supporting arguments.
Your pitch was interesting and I thought that you conveyed the information about your re-branding idea and employed forms of address in your pitch to communicate ideas effectively. The pitch was visually good and you deployed and managed technology to pitch a media production proposal with creativity and flair and to near professional standards.

In regards to unit 30: Advertisement Production for Television:
Within your TV advert analysis, you were able to explain structures and techniques of TV advertisements with reference to detailed examples and with generally correct use of subject terminology.
Working within your group, you were able originate and develop an idea for a TV advertisement showing some imagination and with only occasional assistance. The advert demonstrated a good understanding of conventions in TV adverts and it was clear that you were able to produce a TV advertisement to a good standard showing some imagination and with only occasional assistance.
Your evaluation was also detailed and you explained your own TV advertisement production work with reference to detailed illustrative examples and generally correct use of subject terminology.

Documentary Formats Mini Task

Film & TV Mini Task:
A documentary is film making that makes the audience think about the topic that is being discussed and shown. A documentary must be factual and are used to give information to the audience as well as to make them think about the subject of the documentary.

Expository Documentary:
An expository documentary is a style in which the facts and video and being narrated by a voiceover, this voiceover gives the audience facts and describes the documentary to the audience. The voiceover can be used to influence people opinions on a topic by talking positively or negatively with what’s going on in the documentary. Blackfish is a documentary about the killer whale at Sea world and man’s relationship with nature.

Observational Documentary:
In an observational documentary the film maker records random clips around the topic, and leaves the audience to decide what they think of the topic. The film maker is not in the documentary and does not influence what is being recorded, they record what is going on around them, although they choose what they wish to record, such as some documentaries may only focus on the positive scenes from the series of clips they filmed to influence the audience on the topic, they simply film real life as it is. An example of an observational documentary is Hoop Dreams, which is about how two boys make their dreams of becoming basketball players, and shows their life and struggles.

Interactive Documentary:
An interactive documentary is where the filmmaker is in the documentary and interacts with the people in their documentary about a certain topic; they would ask questions to the people in their documentary to show the audience their answers and opinions. Interactive documentaries usually heavily influence the viewer by using certain clips and editing them in a fashion which affects the person’s opinion on the topic based off of what they see. An example of an Interactive documentary is Louis Theroux’s documentary on Jimmy Savile.
Reflexive Documentary:
A reflexive documentary is a style in which the filmmaker puts together a series of scenes which depicts everyday life, the way that this style of documentary is shot is in a way which makes you think about the messages that the documentary is trying to show you, without a voiceover or anything to help guide the audience, the documentary can be interpreted in different ways but they all have a message to give to the audience. Reflexive documentaries can be deceiving due to the documentary being accurate but the way the film is shot and edited may make it false representation of the topic being shown. An example of this is Powaqquatsi.

Performative Documentary:

A performative documentary is where the filmmaker recreates the event that is being discussed in the documentary to entertain the audience and help them to understand better. Performative documentaries can over exaggerate what really happened. The camera and soundtrack can help the audience feel a part of the documentary. These types of documentaries often involve a lot of interviews with different people who help build the story or message of the documentary. Forensic Detectives is an example of Performative Documentaries which are based on murders, the documentaries interview people that were involved with solving the murder and recreating the crime scene.

Conclusion:
I think that the documentary should present accurate information and it must be factual, I think that if the documentary tries to influence the audience then they may miss the context in which the information is being given, this is especially in interactive documentaries where the filmmaker can directly influence how the audience should think and to pass on their views as a filmmaker. Validity When a filmmaker is trying to change your opinions or emphasises things through editing that the validity of the information being given to you is questionable.

3MW - Blek le Rat

I liked this 3 minute wonder; we get to see the opinion of a french graffiti artist on youth and that people in different areas of the world like art in different ways. The documentary was entertaining throughout, through the cinematography, voice over and the time lapse of him.

3MW - This is our youth

This 3 minute wonder had good cinematography, I feel that it was trying too hard to be funny which made me dislike it. The idea was good and they got their point across. I like the idea of having two teams of people against each other and trying to make the school how they want and the clash of opinions. The video shows the opposite of the argument very briefly but is very centered on sharing the documentary makers opinion.

3MW - Dan Flavin - Untitled

The things I like about this video is its ability to make you think about what art is and what is considered art and also the meaning behind art. The style of the documentary is very audio oriented, the sound quality is good allowing me to clearly hear their opinions.

Vo5 Evaluation

Section 1. The brief
What was the brief?

What was your chosen product and how did you decide, as a group, to choose it?

The chosen product was Vo5 hair gel, we decided in our group based on the synopsis of our adverts and which one sounded the most interesting to rebrand. We also based our decision on the new target audience the product would be rebranded to.

Who is the current target audience for the product and who did you decide to appeal to? Why?

The current target audience is 15 to 30 year old males who are working to middle class. The target audience I rebranded Vo5 to be 15 to 30 year old females who are also working to middle class. I thought this would appeal to this target audience because there many hair gels that are advertised and aimed towards women so I thought that targeting Vo5 towards women will show the hair gel can be used by men and women.

Section 2. The finished product & feedback

How did you collect the feedback (comments from others) on your finished advert from your target audience? Provide a summary of the main points.

We collected feedback from our peers as well as asking women around our college what they thought of our advert and if it appealed to them, we created questionnaires to allow us to collect the results of their feedback.

Appropriateness to audience: do you think you managed to get the main message to your target audience you specified in pre-production. Would the advert have an appropriate impact on them?

I think that we got the main message of our advert to the target audience that Vo5 will give you confidence, I think the advert gives the appropriate impact that women who use Vo5 will give them more confidence to succeed.

Think about the technical and aesthetic qualities of your advertisement. Analyse your use of: mise-en-scene; camera; editing and sound.

The mise-en-scene in the advert fits perfectly with the narrative of the advert mainly due to the setting and lighting, I think that the lighting and setting in the audition room made the narrative clear and was suitable, I also think the use of the camera help give continuity to the advert as well as making the advert more diverse in its camerawork making it more appealing to the audience rather than normal head on close ups. The editing of the advert helped establish what product was being advertised, especially at the end with a still shot with the product coming up on screen. The sound in the advert set the atmosphere and mood, the soundtrack in the advert reflects how the main character feels.

Effectiveness of content: Do you think your finished advert effectively sells the product to the specified audience through its storyline/narrative?

I think the finished advert does sell the product through its storyline and narrative because the main character shows the audience how they feel when they use Vo5, that she becomes confident and finds success. This sells to the specified audience because the main character is a female which is what the target audience is and shows her struggles which other women may be able to relate to.

What was the effectiveness of the persuasion techniques you used to sell the product?

The hashtag ‘Get the style’ in the advert is an effective persuasion technique to sell the product due to women wanting to become stylish and enhance their hair by using the product.

Clarity of communication: what was the message you were trying to send to the target audience? What were the main techniques you used to send that message?

The message that we were trying to send to the target audience was that if you use Vo5 then you will gain confidence and succeed in the challenges ahead, the techniques used to send this message was a narrative in the advert of a girl looking to overcome the obstacles of an audition as well as the hashtag ‘Get the style’ that will women become confident when the look stylish. I also wanted to show that Vo5 hair gel is not only for men but it is also for women.

Overall, do you feel your advert is fit for purpose?

he advert does look professional and it also complies with the BCAP code, for example that the advert must not be discriminatory, encourage crime and it does not distress or exploit the audience’s fears. There is nothing in the advert that could harm anyone or cause any arguments.

Section 3. Personal reflection
How does the final advertisement compare with your original intentions?

The final advert is similar to my original intentions through the storyboards and the advert synopsis, the storyboards are similar to the finished advert as we followed the storyboards without any problems. The advert synopsis a girl that is auditioning as a singer and that she gets rejected the first time but she auditions again after using Vo5 to style her hair, and she gains confidents and succeeds in her audition; this is what the advert shows and this is still the narrative of the advert.

Self-evaluation: Reflect on how satisfied you are with your final advert. Would you do anything differently if you were to undertake the task again? Finally, evaluate your own involvement in the project.

I am satisfied with the final advert as we were able to make a professional advert within the time given with sufficient editing If I were to do this project again I would look for actors who fit the role of the judges better as it looks a little out of place. My own involvement in the project was sorting out actors, the production schedule, parts of the storyboards, filming the advert and finally editing some of the advert. I think I did all of these tasks well, although with more time I would have been able to improve on parts of the pre-production.
